Le Mars, Iowa, U.S., Daily Sentinel http://www.lemarssentinel.com/story/1475255.html Every third grader in the county can tell you what “philanthropy” means. All they have to do is flip open their new dictionary to find it. The Le Mars Kiwanis club handed out dictionaries to all third graders—more than 400—at Plymouth County schools this year. The Kiwanis club handed them out at Le Mars Community, Gehlen Catholic, Remsen Union, Remsen St. Mary's, Kingsley-Pierson, Hinton, and Akron-Westfield. The Dictionary Project started in 2007 when the club gave dictionaries to all Le Mars Community and Gehlen Catholic School third graders. “After it went so well, we decided to spread it out, so we contacted all the schools in the county,” said Kiwanian Jay King. The project started as part of a larger effort sponsored by the regional Kiwanis group. In 2007, the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis made handing out dictionaries its project for the year. The local Kiwanis club raises money for projects like this by running the donut shop at the Plymouth County Fair and holding pancake suppers. All money it makes and any donation it receives goes back to the community. The Le Mars chapter gives out thousands of dollars every year, contributing to groups like Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the local ambulance services, the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, and 4-H. The Kiwanis club is always looking for new members. It meets at 7a.m. every Tuesday in the Floyd Valley Hospital conference room. King said he was glad the club decided to carry on the Dictionary Project this year. Will it continue? King hopes so. “This is something no one else is doing,” he said. “And our motto is to serve the children of the world, so this helps.”

On the 7th, 8th and 9thof November 2008 the two Curacao Kiwanis clubs hosted the 1st 2008 Divisional Council Meeting of div. 26. The participation of the Kiwanis clubs of division 26 exceeded all expectations and the organizing committee is very glad with a participation of over 80 persons. Division 26 is known that when we come together for a divisional meeting we always combine this with activities that give all participants the good feeling that Kiwanis spirit really lives between the members. Division 26 consists of 10 clubs coming from Aruba, Curacao, Suriname, Guyana Frances and Martinique. This implies that always when a divisional counsel meeting is held the participants have to fly to destination where the DCM is being organized. That is the reason why all DCM are being combined with social activities for the members attending. Kiwanis Club of Curacao and Kiwanis Club of Piscadera decided in a joint effort to organize the 1st DCM of division 26 and both clubs are extremely glad that everything went according to plan. The participants from abroad were very satisfied and Lt. Governor Ursi Bainathsah expressed her wish to see the same attendance during the 2nd and 3rd DCM. On Friday 7th of November 2008 the DCM activity started with a welcome / get to know each other party at the home of fellow K Hubert Martha. Besides the dinner and possibility to register there was also a DJ with a lot of good music. The fact that the dancing floor was continuously occupied is an indication that everybody had a lot of fun. On Saturday morning the DCM started around 9 o?clock and although most of the participants were a little tired of the evening before everybody was presented and a lot of good discussions were held. Although sometime there were intense discussions the result of the meeting can be categorized as fruitful. In the evening hours there was a farewell party at one of the nicest building of Curacao, which is Landhuis Granbeeuw. This time the organizing committee took care that besides very good food and drinks there was a live band playing music that was to the delight of everybody. Most of the kiwanians coming from abroad started to leave back home on Sunday morning but those who stayed had the opportunity to enjoy a very nice barbeque and a boattrip on the Spanish Water. The barbeque was held at a weekend home of a friend of Mr. Hubert Martha. Summarizing, the both Kiwanis Club of Curacao as Piscadera are very stratified with the DCM and are looking forward to the next time that these two clubs have to organize this event again. The pictures tell everything.

By Don Canaday, President, Kiwanis International. I truly am honored that you have given me the opportunity to serve our great organization. This past July, my first lady, Kiwanis’ First Lady, Linda, passed away. With this loss, my task as Kiwanis International President became much more difficult. She was the love of my life, my best friend, and my partner. My heart is broken, but she made me promise that if things went wrong with her surgery, I would do everything possible to move Kiwanis forward. I will keep my promise to her. Kiwanis members are known for having a “Kiwanis heart,” willing to give of their time, talents, and treasures for the good of others. On behalf of the millions of lives you have touched and continue to touch, I thank you for your dedication and service. As you go about your lives, look around you at work, your place of worship, your neighborhood. Take a look at your family, friends, and business associates. Give them a chance to use their Kiwanis hearts through Kiwanis! We can greatly increase the impact of our service worldwide merely by increasing Kiwanis membership.
